Today, I would like to share stories of my life that helped me to connect dots to the future. In hindsight, when I reflect today, I realized that there are several dots in my life that showed my way to the future.
I was born to a humble family in a rural setting where both of my parents were uneducated and depends on the farming for the daily livelihood. None of my sisters and brothers could complete formal education. However, my eldest sister is married to a doctor and lived in the capital city of Bhutan, Thimphu. When I was seven years old, my parents could not afford to send me to the school. One fine day when my eldest sister came to meet the parents in the village, my uncle just put me in their car to take me to the city for education while returning back to the city. That was how I started my schooling. Had I been not put in my sister’s car, I would have been in my village now tilling the farmland. When my sister enrolled me in the school, I still had a vivid memory that I wanted to study hard and become someone important person to look after my parents and family when I grow up. This was the hunch I used to have when I started my pre-primary schooling back then 1993.
Another story that I would like to reflect on hindsight that helped me to connect the dots to the future was change of my career. After graduating in higher secondary school in December 2005, I had a plan to study medicine or engineering. Although I got scholarship to undergo bachelor of medicine and science, somehow, I rejected and pursue my business studies. I got very good job in one of the top corporations in Bhutan right after my graduation. I got very good experience in financial planning and business analysis. The experience was worth it to change my career from national companies to international company, World Bank as a short-term consultant. I worked there for a couple of months and had an international experience and exposure. It was good opportunity for me to push my limits to working in the international setting. Sadly, the management decided to close the project and my short-term tenure came to an end. However, my corporate working helped me push me into the international working setting for a couple of months.
Another story that landed me here: I was jobless for couple of months and was really stressed and worried to support my family. It was painful situation that I landed jobless. I met my friend who is close to me and studied together undergraduate back in my college. I shared my idea of starting the consultancy and construction firm in Bhutan. We started and got some few projects to handle but did not have much idea of entrepreneurship and innovation. I started thinking hard, what am I going to do when I grow old, I need to leave some legacy to my son and future generations. I needed to do something innovative and entrepreneurial that helps me to grow as a successful entrepreneur in the history of entrepreneurship in Bhutan. That is how I decided to pursue my master degree in MBA/Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. When I reflect now, I feel that leaving my partnership firm fuelled me furthermore to undergo such a flagship course here in Australia, once I finish my course, I am confident that I will something new back in my country. I have already thought some ideas that I would implement back in my country: online app for cabs and food online delivery.
